🔧 Technical Troubleshooting Guide (EN)
Having problems with your camera, microphone, speakers, or video call?
Follow the steps below in order. After each step, check whether the problem is fixed before moving on.
📌 Important: Change only one thing at a time. This helps you identify what may be causing the problem. Your computer, browser, and internet connection are part of your technical setup. TalkAbroad provides the platform, but we cannot remotely control or troubleshoot your personal device or internet connection. If the issue is caused by your device or network, you may need to contact your internet provider, or a local technician for help.
Step 1️⃣ — Check your camera, microphone, and speakers
Before joining your conversation, use the device checks on the TalkAbroad pre-call screen.
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| 📷 Camera | Make sure you can see your camera preview. If you have more than one camera, try selecting a different one. Make sure no other application is using your camera. |
| 🎤 Microphone | Speak and check that the microphone level responds. Make sure you have selected the correct microphone. |
| 🔊 Speakers | Play the speaker test and make sure you can hear the sound. Check that the correct speakers or headphones are selected. |
Does everything work correctly?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| ✅ Your device is ready. If you are still having a problem during the call, continue to Step 2. | ➡️ Check your browser's camera and microphone permissions. Make sure TalkAbroad is allowed to use your camera and microphone. Then test again. |
Step 2️⃣ — Refresh the page
Refresh the TalkAbroad page and try the call again.
Did refreshing the page fix the problem?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| ✅ You're all set! You can continue with your conversation. | ➡️ Continue to Step 3. |
Step 3️⃣ — Try a private/incognito window
Open TalkAbroad in a Private / Incognito window and try the call again. This temporarily avoids some browser extensions and settings that may interfere with the call.
Does the problem disappear in Private / Incognito mode?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| 🔎 The problem may be related to a browser extension or setting. Try disabling browser extensions or ad blockers and test again. | ➡️ Continue to Step 4. |
Step 4️⃣ — Try a different browser
If you normally use Chrome, try another supported browser such as Safari, or Firefox.
Does the problem happen in the other browser?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| ➡️ The problem may be related to your original browser or its settings. Continue to Step 5 to test your internet connection. | 🔎 The problem may be related to your original browser, an extension, or a browser setting. You can continue using the browser that works. |
Step 5️⃣ — Try a different internet connection
If possible, temporarily connect your computer to your phone's mobile hotspot and test the call again. Only do this if your mobile plan allows it, as video calls can use a significant amount of mobile data.
Does the problem disappear when using the mobile hotspot?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| 🔎 Your usual Wi-Fi or network may be contributing to the problem. Try moving closer to your router, stopping downloads/streaming, restarting your router, or contacting your network administrator/Internet Service Provider. | ➡️ The problem may be related to your computer or browser. Continue to Step 6. |
Step 6️⃣ — Try another computer
If possible, use another computer on the same internet connection and try the same call.
Does the problem happen on the other computer?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| 🔎 If the problem happens on both computers, your internet connection or network may be contributing to the problem. | 🔎 If the problem only happens on your original computer, the issue may be related to that computer or its settings. Restart it, update your browser, check camera/microphone permissions, and close other applications that may be using your camera or microphone. |
Step 7️⃣ — Restart your computer
Restart your computer completely and try the call again.
Did restarting your computer fix the problem?
| YES | NO |
|---|---|
| ✅ You're all set! | ➡️ Continue to Step 8. |
Step 8️⃣ — Still having problems?
